Fled (1996)

Fled is the kind of lean, high-octane ’90s action movie that knows exactly what it’s there to do: lock two mismatched men together and turn the world into a moving target. Laurence Fishburne brings granite authority and surprising humor to the chaos, Stephen Baldwin plays the jittery wildcard well enough to keep the sparks flying, and Salma Hayek adds welcome heat and humanity when the film could’ve coasted on adrenaline alone. Director Kevin Hooks keeps the pace snapping with sleek, sweaty cinematography and stunt work that feels physical and close-quartered, the sort of chase-and-shootout momentum that doesn’t give you time to check your watch. It’s not for viewers who want subtlety or a low-violence evening, but if you’re on the fence and craving a brisk, energetic thriller powered by cast chemistry and forward motion, this one delivers.

Fled wants to be a high-octane, mismatched-buddies-on-the-run thriller with big chases, bigger gunfire, and a ticking-clock conspiracy that forces two enemies to cooperate. The problem is it often feels like it’s sprinting on a treadmill: lots of noise and motion, but the plot twists are shaky, the dialogue can be painfully clunky, and the tone wobbles between serious crime thriller and goofy banter without earning either. Laurence Fishburne brings real presence and Salma Hayek adds spark when she shows up, but neither can fully rescue a script that leans hard on familiar 90s action clichés. If you’re after tight writing or believable logic, skip it; if you just want a loud, mid-budget chase movie with attitude and don’t mind nonsense along the way, it might pass the time.
