Ed (1996)

Ed is the kind of sunny, mid-’90s family comedy that knows exactly what it wants to be: a feel-good baseball movie with an absurd hook and a surprisingly warm heart. Matt LeBlanc plays the rattled-under-pressure pitcher with an easy charm, and the film’s greatest trick is how it turns a chimp teammate from a one-note gag into a steady source of camaraderie, gentle mischief, and oddly sincere encouragement. The vibe is light, goofy, and crowd-pleasing—more Saturday-afternoon comfort watch than sharp satire—with enough small-town sweetness and sports-movie momentum to keep you rooting for the whole scrappy team. Ed is clearly aiming for a breezy, family-friendly baseball underdog story where a lovable chimp teammate helps a slumping pitcher find his confidence, and it never pretends to be anything deeper than that. The problem is the comedy is thin, the characters are mostly cardboard, and the plot lurches from cutesy antics to forced heartfelt beats in a way that can feel more exhausting than charming. If you’re expecting sharp jokes, believable sports drama, or anything resembling subtlety, this will test your patience fast. Still, very young kids who laugh at goofy animal behavior and don’t care about logic may find it harmless, and Matt LeBlanc’s easygoing likability does what it can with the material.
