The Craft (1996)

The Craft taps into that intoxicating teenage fantasy where being an outsider isn’t a weakness—it’s a doorway to power, and it does so with a moody, rain-slicked style that still feels like a midnight cable classic. Andrew Fleming wraps the story in an eerie, grunge-era atmosphere, but the real spell is the cast: Robin Tunney’s grounded vulnerability, Neve Campbell’s quiet ache, and especially Fairuza Balk’s volatile magnetism give the film a pulse that’s equal parts empowerment and warning. It’s horror with a dramatic bite, full of sharp high-school cruelty, seductive wish-fulfillment, and supernatural moments that land because the emotions underneath them are real. Fair warning: it goes to some dark places and includes disturbing material, but if you want a slick, character-driven occult thriller that understands how thrilling and dangerous it feels to finally be seen, this one earns its cult reputation.

The Craft is clearly aiming for a dark teen fable about power, belonging, and what happens when revenge starts feeling like justice, and for a good stretch it nails that moody, outsider energy. The problem is the back half leans hard into louder supernatural theatrics, and the story can feel predictable and a bit morally blunt once it shifts from character-driven tension to “now we need a big showdown.” The pacing gets uneven and some plot turns play more like genre checkpoints than organic choices, which can make the climax feel less sharp than the setup promises. Still, the cast sells the angst and menace, and the atmosphere is strong—just don’t go in expecting subtle horror or airtight storytelling, especially given the intense content around violence and sexual assault.
