The vibe is bittersweet and bracing: it can make you grin one moment and catch your throat the next, without ever feeling manipulative. It isn’t for viewers who want their feel-good films fluffy—there’s strong language and a genuinely distressing mental-health thread—but if you’re on the fence, this is the kind of movie that leaves you uplifted and quietly furious in the best way.

Brassed Off is aiming for a rousing underdog crowd-pleaser that uses a brass band as a lifeline in a community being hollowed out by pit closures, and when it lets the music and performances speak (especially Pete Postlethwaite’s), it can be genuinely moving. The problem is it often pushes the message so hard that the drama starts to feel engineered, swinging from jokey warmth to bleak social realism in a way that can come off uneven and, for some, emotionally manipulative. The romance is more functional than swoony, and the political anger is blunt rather than nuanced, so if you want subtlety or a lighter comedy, this may grate. Still, if you can tolerate a heavy hand and strong language for the sake of a heartfelt, working-class story with terrific musical set-pieces, it delivers enough spirit to be worth your time.
