Black Sheep (1996)
When dignified Albert Donnelly runs for Governor, his team moves to keep his slow-witted and klutzy younger brother, Mike, out of the eye of the media. To baby-sit Mike, the campaign assigns sarcastic Steve, who gets the experience of a lifetime when he tries to take Mike out of town during the election.
What people think about Black Sheep
Black Sheep is a pure, high-octane showcase for the wonderfully mismatched chemistry of Chris Farley and David Spade, the kind of buddy comedy that runs on momentum, mayhem, and surprisingly sturdy charm. Penelope Spheeris keeps the pace snappy and the tone buoyant, turning political-window-dressing into a springboard for set pieces that escalate with cartoon logic and real comic commitment. Farley’s big-hearted chaos and Spade’s dry, wounded sarcasm play off each other like a perfectly timed argument that keeps getting funnier the more it spirals out of control. If you’re allergic to broad, juvenile slapstick, it may feel like too much dessert—but if you want an easy, rowdy laugh machine with two stars in their comfort zone, this one delivers.
Black Sheep is clearly trying to bottle the Farley–Spade chemistry again, wrapping big physical comedy and bickering buddy energy around a goofy political road-trip setup. The problem is the movie leans hard on loud slapstick and predictable “Mike ruins everything” beats, so if you’re not already laughing at pratfalls and sheer chaos, the thin plot and low-effort jokes won’t save it. Chris Farley’s commitment and sweetness still land in spots, and David Spade’s snark gives the movie a pulse, but it rarely rises above “Tommy Boy-lite.” If you want a smarter comedy or anything resembling subtlety, skip it; if you just want broad, noisy Farley antics with minimal thinking, it’ll do the job.
