Bio-Dome (1996)

Bio-Dome is a pure 1990s time capsule, the kind of broad, brain-off comedy that commits so hard to its own dumbness it circles back around to being weirdly charming. Pauly Shore and Stephen Baldwin play best-friend chaos agents turned accidental eco-inmates, and the movie’s biggest pleasure is watching their shameless, juvenile energy ricochet off a straight-faced world of scientists and rules they were never built to follow. The vibe is loud, silly, and proudly lowbrow, with a cult-movie rhythm that rewards anyone in the mood for quotable nonsense and nostalgic “good kind of bad” comfort. If crude jokes and stoner-adjacent humor aren’t your thing, it’ll feel like a sealed container you want to escape—but if you meet it on its level, it’s an easy, oddly lovable ride.

Bio-Dome is trying to be a goofy, anti-establishment ‘90s hangout comedy where two lovable idiots accidentally crash a serious science experiment and, through chaos, stumble toward a lesson. The problem is it mostly plays like a string of loud, crude bits without much rhythm or payoff, and the environmental premise is basically a backdrop for juvenile gags rather than something the movie builds clever comedy around. If you don’t enjoy Pauly Shore’s hyperactive persona, gross-out humor, and “people acting dumb because the script needs them to” plotting, this will feel like a long 88 minutes. That said, if you’re nostalgic for dumb late-night cable comedies and can laugh at sheer stupidity, there are a few energetic moments and committed performances that might make it tolerable.
