Bad Moon (1996)

Bad Moon has a wonderfully primal hook that most werewolf movies never think to use: it turns the family dog into the first line of defense, and that simple shift makes every scene feel more tense, more intimate, and oddly more emotional. Director Eric Red keeps the vibe lean and nasty, building dread around a cursed man trying to stay human long enough to protect the people he loves, while the film’s crunchy practical effects deliver the kind of tactile, old-school creature horror that digital fur can’t fake. It’s also got a streak of individuality—part domestic thriller, part monster movie—where loyalty and instinct matter as much as claws and blood. Fair warning: it’s definitely a ’90s R-rated ride with gore and a bit of sleaze, but if you like your horror physical, suspenseful, and anchored by a very good dog who knows exactly what’s wrong, this is an underrated treat.

Bad Moon is clearly trying to be a tragic “monster in the family” story, with a nice twist that the dog is the one who senses the truth and becomes the real protector. The problem is the execution: the screenplay lurches between serious drama and unintentional camp, and the werewolf effects and costume often look too rubbery to sustain real dread. Some performances work better than others, but the direction doesn’t always sell the tension, so scenes that should feel scary can come off a bit silly instead. If you want a genuinely chilling werewolf movie, this may disappoint—but if you’re in the mood for a scrappy ’90s creature feature with a loyal-dog hero and some gnarly R-rated violence, it can still be a guilty little watch.
