The Associate (1996)
Laurel Ayres is a businesswoman trying to make it but unfortunately she works at a investment firm where she does all the work but all the senior investors like Frank Peterson grab all the credit. She then leaves and starts her own firm. While trying to find clients Laurel pretends that she has a male partner named Robert Cutty. And when she starts to do well all of her clients wants to meet Cutty which is difficult since he doesn't exist.
What people think about The Associate
The Associate is the kind of high-concept comedy that works because it’s powered by a real, satisfying sting: watching a brilliant woman outsmart a system determined to ignore her. Whoopi Goldberg carries the movie with that effortless mix of sharp timing and grounded warmth, turning Laurel’s escalating “invent-a-partner” scheme into something both hilarious and oddly cathartic, especially as the Wall Street boys’ club keeps taking the bait. Donald Petrie keeps the pace lively, and the supporting cast—particularly Dianne Wiest and Eli Wallach—adds a buoyant rhythm that makes the whole caper feel like it’s constantly gathering momentum. It’s not a subtle satire and it leans into broad, crowd-pleasing comedy, but if you’re in the mood for a smart, scrappy underdog story with big laughs and a satisfying sense of comeuppance, this one’s a treat.
The Associate is clearly trying to be a crowd-pleasing Wall Street farce with a pointed message about sexism and racism, anchored by Whoopi Goldberg’s charisma and timing. The problem is it leans hard on a familiar “fake identity” setup without enough fresh twists, so the plot beats can feel like they’re marching along on autopilot. The central disguise gag is also a bit of a stretch, and if you can’t buy the Robert Cutty persona, the whole comedic engine starts sputtering. Still, Goldberg and Dianne Wiest have an easy chemistry and there are satisfying moments of comeuppance, but if you want sharp satire or a truly inventive comedy, this one may feel like a reheated version of a better idea.
