Virtuosity (1995)
The Law Enforcement Technology Advancement Centre (LETAC) has developed SID version 6.7: a Sadistic, Intelligent, and Dangerous virtual reality entity which is synthesized from the personalities of more than 150 serial killers, and only one man can stop him.
What people think about Virtuosity
Virtuosity is the kind of mid-’90s sci-fi thriller that swings big and lands with the crackle of a great B-movie idea executed at full volume: what if a digital monster built from the worst human impulses could walk into the real world? It’s slick, punchy, and constantly in motion, with set pieces that feel like a neon-lit warning about technology’s dark side without ever forgetting to be a crowd-pleasing action ride. Russell Crowe, in particular, is a gleefully unhinged force of nature, turning the villain into a charismatic nightmare you can’t look away from. If you prefer subtle, grounded science fiction, this may be too loud and pulpy—but if you want a fun, high-concept thriller with attitude, it’s an easy yes.
Virtuosity is clearly aiming for a slick, high-concept ’90s techno-thriller: a virtual serial-killer mashup brought into the real world, with big action and bigger attitude. The problem is the script feels like a patchwork of familiar beats, piling on jargon and twists without giving the characters much depth or the story much logic to lean on. The effects and “future tech” ideas have aged hard, so if you need believable world-building or modern visuals, you’ll be rolling your eyes more than gripping the armrest. Still, if you can enjoy it as a loud, disposable time capsule with a few energetic set pieces and a knowingly pulpy vibe, it might scratch that guilty-pleasure itch.
