Michael Jai White doesn’t just mimic Mike Tyson’s physique and mannerisms; he suggests the loneliness behind the glare, while George C. Scott brings a stern, almost mythic gravity to Cus D’Amato as the one man who could shape that chaos into purpose. Uli Edel keeps the film moving with a restless, tabloid-speed momentum that mirrors Tyson’s own rise-and-fall whiplash, making it feel less like a neat biography and more like a life spiraling in real time. It’s not a gentle watch—there’s harsh language, violence, and the story heads into deeply troubling territory—but if you want a raw, propulsive drama about fame, damage, and the cost of power, it lands with a bruising punch.

Tyson is clearly trying to cram an entire tabloid-sized life into a TV-movie runtime, hitting the big milestones from Cus D’Amato to the courtroom and hoping the sheer momentum will do the heavy lifting. The problem is it moves so fast and skims so many events that it rarely digs into the psychology or consequences in a way that feels earned, so you may finish it feeling informed but not truly satisfied. Michael Jai White brings real physical presence and George C. Scott adds gravitas, yet the storytelling can feel more like a highlight reel than a coherent character study. If you want a deep, nuanced biopic that sits with messy details, this may frustrate you; if you’re okay with a brisk, broad-strokes overview with strong performances, it’s serviceable.
