Toy Story (1995)

Toy Story feels like pure movie magic: a wildly imaginative idea brought to life with such wit and heart that it still plays like a fresh discovery. John Lasseter turns childhood nostalgia into a brisk, funny adventure, anchored by the pitch-perfect chemistry of Tom Hanks’s warmly anxious Woody and Tim Allen’s gloriously self-serious Buzz Lightyear. It’s groundbreaking without showing off—every technical leap is in service of character, comedy, and that surprisingly tender ache of wanting to matter. If you’re allergic to animated films, it may not convert you, but if you’re even slightly open to wonder, this is the kind of classic that earns its reputation.

Toy Story is aiming to be a fast, funny buddy-adventure about jealousy, identity, and learning to share the spotlight, and it largely succeeds on charm and character chemistry. That said, if you’re coming in because it’s “the classic everyone loves,” you might find the plotting pretty straightforward and the humor more snarky than sparkling compared to some other animated films of the era. The early CGI has a distinctly dated look, and the movie can get surprisingly tense and a bit sharp-edged in places—something that may not land well with very young kids or viewers wanting purely gentle comfort viewing. If you can meet it on its own terms, the voice performances and emotional through-line still do a lot of heavy lifting, even when the hype makes it hard to be impressed.
