Total Eclipse (1995)

Total Eclipse is special because it treats poetry like a dangerous weather system—something that can intoxicate, illuminate, and then scorch everything it touches. Agnieszka Holland conjures a feverish period atmosphere where absinthe haze, cramped rooms, and sudden bursts of tenderness make the romance feel less like a courtship than a collision, and the film’s emotional honesty gives that collision real weight. Leonardo DiCaprio is feral and magnetic as Rimbaud, David Thewlis brings raw, battered vulnerability to Verlaine, and together they create an intensity that’s hard to shake long after the credits. It’s not a gentle or “date night” romance—there’s explicit sexuality and upsetting violence—but if you’re drawn to stories about obsessive love, artistic hunger, and the high cost of chasing ecstasy, this one is bracingly alive.

Total Eclipse is aiming for a sweaty, fever-dream portrait of genius and obsession, using Rimbaud and Verlaine’s affair as the engine for a descent into art-as-self-destruction. The problem is it leans so hard into misery, provocation, and shock that you may come away wondering what either man actually created that justified the myth, because the film doesn’t do much to translate their brilliance onto the screen. It’s also emotionally chilly and pretty humorless, with an uneven, sometimes self-important tone that can feel like it’s mistaking gloom for depth. Still, DiCaprio and Thewlis commit, and if you want an intense, adult, sexually explicit period drama about toxic romance rather than a satisfying “artists at work” story, you might find it compelling; if you’re looking for insight, warmth, or a clearer sense of their poetry, this likely isn’t for you.
