Tales from the Hood is clearly trying to be a horror anthology with teeth—using supernatural comeuppance to tackle racism, police brutality, child abuse, and street violence, all wrapped in a pulpy “morality tales” framing device. When it works, it’s because Clarence Williams III sells the hellish storyteller vibe and a couple segments land their social commentary with real bite. The problem is it’s wildly uneven: some stories feel blunt and predictable, the scares are more campy than genuinely frightening, and the tonal whiplash can make the message feel heavier than the filmmaking. If you want polished horror or consistent chills, this may disappoint, but if you’re up for a rough-edged, message-forward ’90s cult oddity with moments of inspired nastiness, it’s worth a look.
