Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (1995)

Demon Knight is the kind of rowdy, midnight-movie horror that knows exactly how to entertain: it locks you in a dusty New Mexico boarding house, turns the pressure up scene by scene, and then has the nerve to crack a grin while it does it. Ernest R. Dickerson shoots the mayhem with muscular style and pulpy momentum, but the real irresistible hook is Billy Zane, gleefully swaggering through every moment like the devil’s slickest carnival barker. The film mixes siege-thriller tension with splattery creature-feature gore and a Tales from the Crypt sense of bad taste that’s weirdly charming when you’re in the right mood. If you don’t like your horror loud, bloody, and proudly juvenile, it won’t convert you—but if you do, it’s a blast.

Demon Knight is clearly aiming for a rowdy, comic-book siege movie with demons at the door, a scrappy group of strangers inside, and a Crypt Keeper vibe that wants you laughing between the splatters. The problem is it often plays like a standard “hold the fort” horror setup you’ve seen before, with pacing that sags and twists you can spot a mile away, so it’s not consistently scary or consistently funny. If you’re after tight thrills, inventive mythology, or genuinely sharp humor, this can feel a bit slack and by-the-numbers. Still, Billy Zane commits hard to the villainy, the practical gore has a satisfyingly nasty ’90s texture, and if you’re in the mood for loud, messy B-movie energy, it can scratch that itch.
