Napoleon (1995)
The adventures of Golden Retriever pup Napoleon and his friend, the parrot Birdo Lucci.
What people think about Napoleon
Napoleon is the kind of family adventure that feels like a storybook come to life: wide-eyed, outdoorsy, and powered by the simple, irresistible idea of a little pup chasing a big dream. Set against the Australian landscape, it balances gentle comedy with real “out in the world” wonder, especially thanks to the lively back-and-forth between Napoleon and his wisecracking parrot companion, Birdo. The movie’s charm is in its earnestness—there’s a warm, old-fashioned sincerity to watching a small dog test his courage and discover what “wild” really means. Fair warning for very young or sensitive kids: a menacing black cat adds some tense moments, but for most families it’s just enough edge to make the adventure feel exciting.
Napoleon is clearly aiming for a kid-friendly Australian adventure about a pampered puppy chasing a “wild” dream, with gentle lessons about bravery and belonging. But it’s a very simple, very talky animal-fable that can feel slow and low-stakes if you’re expecting big laughs, slick animation, or a tightly paced family blockbuster. Some of the peril is mild but persistent, especially the black cat threat, which may unsettle sensitive kids more than the movie’s cuddly tone suggests. If you’ve got younger children who enjoy straightforward animal adventures and don’t mind an old-school, modest production style, it’s sweet enough; older kids and adults may find it thin and repetitive.
