All Things Fair (1995)

All Things Fair is the rare coming-of-age drama that feels like a memory you didn’t live but somehow recognize—tender, unsettling, and deeply human, with Bo Widerberg directing with a steady hand that never cheapens what it’s looking at. Set against the muted anxieties of wartime Sweden, it captures adolescence as a storm of longing and confusion, where every glance carries the weight of a decision you’re not ready to make. Johan Widerberg and Marika Lagercrantz give performances that are intimate and unguarded, letting the film’s emotional power build quietly until it lands with real force. It’s not a comfortable watch—its central relationship is morally fraught and explicitly depicted—but if you can sit with that discomfort, you’ll find a beautifully made, sharply felt film about desire, loneliness, and the cost of crossing lines.

All Things Fair is aiming for a wistful, wartime coming-of-age romance, mixing first love, grief, and the lure of adult sophistication in a way that’s meant to feel bittersweet rather than sensational. The problem is that it asks you to sit with a teacher–student affair involving a 15-year-old and treats it largely through the boy’s perspective, which can come off less like a critique of exploitation and more like a male rite-of-passage fantasy, with the women and side characters underwritten. The war backdrop and family threads add texture, but several subplots (especially the parents’ inner lives) feel sketched in, so the emotional fallout doesn’t always land as hard as it should. If you’re sensitive to power-imbalance relationships, explicit nudity/sex, or want a more balanced gender perspective, this will likely frustrate you—though the performances and period mood may still appeal if you can accept its limitations.
