Kids (1995)
A group of bored, disaffected New York City teenagers spend a day skating, smoking, drinking, partying, deflowering virgins, and getting into fights.
What people think about Kids
Kids is the kind of film that doesn’t “tell a story” so much as drop you into a sweltering New York day and dare you to look away, capturing teenage drift with a rawness that still feels electrically alive. Larry Clark’s camera and the natural, unvarnished performances (especially from Chloë Sevigny) create a sense of authenticity so convincing it can feel like eavesdropping on real lives—funny, aimless, cruel, and suddenly frightening. It’s a grimy, relentless coming-of-age vibe where the city’s freedom becomes a trap, and the movie’s power comes from how seriously it treats consequences without preaching. This is not for everyone—its sexual content and drug use are genuinely disturbing—but if you can handle an uncompromising portrait of recklessness, it’s a bracing, unforgettable experience.
Kids is trying to be an unfiltered, street-level snapshot of mid-’90s New York youth culture, using raw realism to warn about recklessness, sex, and consequences. The problem is that its “authenticity” often feels like a dare: long stretches of aimless hanging out build atmosphere, but can also read as tedious, with characters sketched more as impulses than people you’ll care about. It leans hard into shocking, sexual, and degrading material, and if you’re sensitive to exploitation—or simply don’t want to spend your evening in a grimy, nihilistic headspace—this will feel more repellent than enlightening. That said, if you can handle the ugliness, it does have a blunt, time-capsule power and a few performances that sell the unsettling naturalism.
