Jumanji (1995)

Jumanji is that rare family adventure that feels like a bedtime story with real teeth: one innocent game night turns a quiet New England town into a stampeding, storm-soaked jungle fever dream, and it’s thrilling to watch the ordinary world crack open. Joe Johnston keeps the pace brisk and the visuals gleefully imaginative, layering set pieces that are exciting without losing the sense of wonder that makes kids lean in and adults grin. At the center is Robin Williams, bringing warmth, urgency, and a slightly haunted edge that gives the fantasy stakes emotional weight, while the young cast sells the panic and courage in equal measure. It’s not subtle and it can get legitimately intense for younger viewers, but if you want a crowd-pleasing ride where the magic feels messy, loud, and alive, this one still delivers.

The pacing is loud and relentless, and the constant danger (especially involving kids) can be more stressful than fun for younger viewers or anyone sensitive to intense family “thrills.” Still, if you’re in the mood for a nostalgic 90s fantasy ride with practical effects, big set pieces, and Williams doing what he does best, it delivers that kind of chaotic Saturday-afternoon energy.
