The Hunted (1995)

What makes The Hunted stand out is the way it turns a straightforward man-on-the-run thriller into a sleek collision of modern paranoia and old-world ritual, where steel, speed, and honor feel like they belong in the same frame. Christopher Lambert plays the outsider with just the right mix of panic and stubborn grit, while the Japanese cast—especially Yoshio Harada’s commanding presence—gives the film a gravity that elevates it above typical mid-’90s action fare. J.F. Lawton keeps the vibe lean and nocturnal, punctuating the chase with crisp swordplay and a thundering taiko-driven soundtrack that makes the set pieces feel almost ceremonial, including a standout sequence aboard a bullet train. It is undeniably pulpy and very violent (with some nudity), but if you’re on the fence and want an action-thriller with real style and a surprisingly potent sense of place, this one earns its cult affection.

The Hunted wants to be a slick East-meets-West chase thriller, tossing a fish-out-of-water American into a shadowy world of ninjas, yakuza, and old-school samurai honor. The problem is it leans hard on clichés and convenient plot turns, and Christopher Lambert’s everyman-in-over-his-head vibe doesn’t always sell the stakes, so the whole thing can feel more like a noisy B-movie than a gripping conspiracy. It’s also longer than its story really earns, with stretches that drag between the occasional bursts of action. If you’re in the mood for pulpy 90s martial-arts mayhem and can forgive absurdity, there are some fun set pieces and a strong, stern presence from Yoshio Harada—but if you want tight writing, believable character work, or restraint with violence and nudity, this probably isn’t your night.
