Chow Yun-Fat brings a weary nobility to the hotel’s keeper—charisma edged with sorrow—while the film’s offbeat humor and hardboiled romantic ache keep it from becoming just another shoot-’em-up. Peace Hotel is clearly aiming for a stylish, mythic mash-up of action, crime, and western-like honor codes, with Chow Yun-Fat doing his best to sell a weary-gunslinger-in-a-suit vibe. The problem is the movie’s tone swings hard—broad comedy, sudden cruelty, and earnest melodrama sit in the same room and don’t always agree to coexist, which can make the storytelling feel choppy rather than thrilling.
