GoldenEye is clearly trying to relaunch Bond for a post–Cold War world: bigger stunts, sleeker tech, and a personal betrayal angle that gives the villain some bite. When it’s in motion, it delivers—there are several iconic action sequences and Pierce Brosnan has the right mix of charm and steel to carry them. But if you need sharp dialogue, genuine emotional weight, or a tightly paced script, this one can feel like it’s coasting between set pieces, with character moments that land more as “serviceable” than stirring. Also, the film leans into a very 90s brand of sex-and-violence camp (including a notorious, sexually charged assassin), so if that tone puts you off, you may admire its legacy more than you enjoy the ride.
