First Knight (1995)

First Knight is the kind of old-fashioned, big-screen romantic adventure that doesn’t apologize for being sincere: it wants you to believe in Camelot as an idea, in honor as something worth bleeding for, and in love as the one force that can make heroes behave badly. Jerry Zucker stages the action with glossy confidence—castle halls, torchlit raids, and clanging swordplay that feel tactile and grand—while the real pull is the triangle at the center, played with aching restraint by Julia Ormond and a wonderfully weathered, kingly Sean Connery opposite Richard Gere’s restless charm. The tone is sweeping and accessible rather than mythic and mystical, more summer entertainment than deep-dive Arthurian scholarship, and it moves with the momentum of a crowd-pleaser that knows exactly when to soar. If you want the darker, thornier legend, this may feel too polished, but if you’re on the fence and craving romance, spectacle, and star power in a handsome medieval package, it’s an easy yes.

If you want mythic grandeur, sharper dialogue, or a romance that burns rather than simmers, this may leave you oddly unmoved. Still, Sean Connery brings real gravitas, the production has that ’90s prestige sheen, and the action beats are serviceable if you’re in the mood for an easy, old-school period crowd-pleaser.
