Chris Gerolmo keeps the focus where it belongs—on the relentless work of detection and the quiet heroism of people pushing against bureaucracy—while Stephen Rea brings weary conviction to Lt. Burakov, perfectly complemented by Donald Sutherland’s canny, morally complicated ally and Max von Sydow’s chillingly calm psychological insight. The tone is grim and sober rather than lurid, with suspense that comes from obstacles, politics, and hard-won breakthroughs instead of cheap shocks. It’s not an easy watch given the subject matter, but if you want a crime drama that respects the truth and your intelligence, Citizen X is deeply absorbing and hard to shake.
