Explained

What people think about Lover of the Last Empress

Lover of the Last Empress is the kind of lavish historical drama that pulls you into a sealed world of silk, ceremony, and whispered power plays, then refuses to let you look away. Andrew Lau stages the Qing court like a beautiful trap—gorgeous costumes and painterly interiors masking a ruthless social ecosystem—and Chingmy Yau gives a centerpiece performance that tracks a young woman’s hardening with unsettling conviction. The film’s vibe is decadent, sensual, and sharply melodramatic, with intrigue that moves like poison through a gilded hallway, and Tony Leung Ka-fai adds a charged countercurrent of charisma and political tension. It’s not for everyone—its Category III eroticism and cruelty can feel bracing—but if you want an entertaining, visually sumptuous rise-and-fall tale about how power reshapes the soul, this one is easy to recommend.
