Casino (1995)
In Las Vegas, two best friends--a casino executive and a Mafia enforcer--compete for a gambling empire and a fast-living, fast-loving socialite.
What people think about Casino
Casino is Scorsese at full stride: a glittering, propulsive descent into a Las Vegas that feels less like a city than a high-speed machine built to turn desire into damage. The movie’s special power is how intoxicating it makes the surface—money, suits, neon, privilege—while the camera and narration reveal the meticulous gears underneath, every deal and betrayal clicking into place with ruthless momentum. De Niro brings cool, managerial precision, Pesci is pure volatility, and Sharon Stone delivers a fearless, heartbreaking performance that turns glamour into something jagged and human. It’s long, loud, and brutally explicit—definitely not for the squeamish—but if you want an epic crime drama that moves like a thriller and lingers like a tragedy, this is one of the genre’s great, feverish rides.
Casino is Scorsese trying to do a grand, sweaty autopsy of mob-era Las Vegas—how money, violence, and ego turn a glittering machine into a meat grinder—and on that level it’s expertly made. But it’s long, relentlessly narrated, and often feels like variations on the same rise-and-fall beats, so if you want a tight, character-driven crime story, this can start to feel repetitive rather than riveting. The relationships are intentionally toxic and exhausting, with severe violence, heavy drug use, and nonstop profanity that don’t let up, so it’s not a “fun gangster movie” night. If you’re in the mood for maximalist spectacle and powerhouse performances (Stone is especially ferocious), it delivers; if you’re hoping for Scorsese’s sharpest focus, this may test your patience.
