The Brady Bunch Movie (1995)

What makes The Brady Bunch Movie such a delight is its genius, deadpan premise: it doesn’t “update” the Bradys so much as drop their sunny, polyester-perfect 1970s worldview into the cynically cool 1990s and let the culture clash do the comedy. Betty Thomas directs with an affectionate wink, treating the characters like real people while the world around them reacts like they’ve wandered in from a time capsule, and the result is camp that’s surprisingly warm rather than mean. Shelley Long and Gary Cole nail the sincerity at the center, so even as the jokes land, there’s a cozy, family-friendly glow that makes you root for this aggressively wholesome clan. It’s not for everyone if you can’t stand intentional cheesiness or broad sitcom rhythms, but if you’re in the mood for a smart spoof that still loves what it’s poking fun at, this one turns nostalgia into comic gold.

The Brady Bunch Movie is clearly trying to be a fish-out-of-water satire, dropping the squeaky-clean ’70s family into the grungier ’90s and letting the culture clash do the work. The problem is it plays that idea surprisingly safe, so the jokes often feel mild and the PG-13 edge never quite commits to being sharp or truly outrageous. If you’re expecting a laugh-a-minute spoof or a biting takedown, you may find it a bit bland and oddly muted for a premise that should be louder. Still, the production design nails the candy-colored vibe, and the cast leans into the sincerity hard enough that fans of the original (or anyone who enjoys gentle, goofy nostalgia) will probably have a decent time.
