The Big Green (1995)
In a depressed Texas town, British foreign exchange teacher Anna attempts to inject some life into her hopeless kids by introducing them to soccer. They're terrible at first, but Anna and her football-hero assistant whip them into shape. As they work overtime, the pair help kids build their self-esteem and also get involved in solving family squabbles.
What people think about The Big Green
What makes The Big Green special is how effortlessly it turns a familiar “ragtag team” setup into a warm, genuinely buoyant little shot of optimism, powered less by big sports spectacle than by the simple pleasure of watching kids discover they’re not doomed to be losers. Olivia d’Abo brings a bright, lived-in energy as the well-meaning British teacher, and the film’s comedy lands with an easygoing, family-friendly vibe that never feels mean-spirited, even when the competition gets cocky. It’s the kind of ’90s crowd-pleaser where small-town bruised pride, goofy mascot humor, and real self-esteem growth all share the same sunny afternoon. If you need surprise twists or edgy laughs, it may feel comfortingly predictable—but if you want an endearing, PG pick-me-up that leaves you smiling, it’s a very easy “yes.”
The Big Green is clearly aiming for that feel-good, “kids find confidence through sports” bounce, and it does have an easy, wholesome charm that makes it a safe PG family pick. The problem is it plays like a checklist of underdog-movie beats you’ve already seen, so if you’re older or want surprises, you’ll likely feel the story telegraphing every turn long before it happens. The comedy is gentle and broad rather than genuinely sharp, which can make the pacing feel a bit plodding between the big game moments. If you’re in the mood for a low-stakes, nostalgic ‘90s Disney sports comfort watch, it’ll do the job; if you’re hoping for originality or laughs that land for adults too, this probably isn’t your match.
