Buffalo Girls (1995)

Buffalo Girls feels special because it treats the end of the frontier not as a museum piece, but as a living, bruised, funny, and strangely tender goodbye—an epic Western with real emotional weather in its skies. Anchored by an outstanding Anjelica Huston, it lets Calamity Jane be larger-than-life without sanding down her rough edges, balancing swaggering adventure with the ache of searching for what’s been lost. The cinematography and costumes do more than look gorgeous; they pull you into a world of dust, velvet, and hard-won survival, giving the whole miniseries a sweeping, acclaimed grandeur. If you want a fast, gunfire-only Western, this may feel more reflective than you expect, but if you’re on the fence for a big, character-driven ride, it’s the kind that lingers.

Buffalo Girls wants to be a sweeping, character-driven Western elegy, following Calamity Jane through a big, emotional journey of identity, friendship, and a changing frontier. The problem is the storytelling often feels padded and oddly low-energy for something packed with “bold escapades,” with dialogue that can land flat and character beats that don’t always earn their weight. If you’re coming for a gritty, historically grounded take or you care about faithful source material and tight arcs, the deviations and underdeveloped side characters may test your patience. Still, if you like TV-movie Western comfort food with a strong central presence and a sentimental streak about found family, there’s enough warmth and camaraderie to make it an easy, if imperfect, watch.
