Wolf (1994)
An aging publisher becomes a demon wolf and, with this newfound youthful vigor, fights to keep his job.
What people think about Wolf
Wolf is what happens when a classy, adult drama gets bitten by a great old-school monster movie—and instead of turning silly, it turns sharper, funnier, and strangely seductive. Mike Nichols stages the whole thing like a glossy New York power play with moonlit fangs, letting Jack Nicholson’s sly grin and simmering menace sell the idea that midlife reinvention can feel like a predator waking up. Michelle Pfeiffer brings a cool, wounded intelligence that makes the romance feel earned, while James Spader is deliciously slippery as the kind of villain you’d gladly watch get outmaneuvered. It’s not a nonstop scare machine—more a witty, atmospheric blend of horror and corporate satire with real bite—so if you like your werewolves with grown-up style and moral mischief, this one’s a treat.
Wolf is clearly aiming for a classy, adult werewolf tale that uses the transformation as a metaphor for middle-aged reinvention, workplace betrayal, and messy desire, and on that level it often looks and sounds terrific. The problem is it can’t quite decide whether it wants to be a sharp, talky Mike Nichols drama or a satisfying creature feature, so the tone drifts and the pacing sags just when you want it to commit. When it finally leans into the genre mechanics, it feels more conventional than the premise promises, and the payoff doesn’t hit as hard emotionally or as horror. Worth your time if you want Nicholson and Pfeiffer sparring in a slick ’90s mood piece with a supernatural edge; skip it if you’re here for sustained scares, a tight thriller rhythm, or a truly feral werewolf movie.
