The beautiful princess Odette is transformed into a swan by an evil sorcerer's spell. Held captive at an enchanted lake, she befriends Jean-Bob the frog, Speed the turtle and Puffin the bird. Despite their struggle to keep the princess safe, these good-natured creatures can do nothing about the sorcerer's spell, which can only be broken by a vow of everlasting love.

Explained

What people think about The Swan Princess

What makes The Swan Princess special is how it captures that classic, storybook “Saturday afternoon” magic: hand-drawn animation with lush, colorful backgrounds, a fairytale romance, and just enough comedy to keep it light on its feet. It has a warm, sincere sweetness that isn’t trying to be cynical or trendy, and the movie’s charm comes from the way it lets its characters be earnest—especially as the heroine finds unlikely friends and the story leans into old-fashioned adventure. The songs and humor give it a bright, cheerful vibe, while the villain brings a dash of shadowy peril that still feels safely in the family-film lane. If you’re looking for a non-Disney animated feature from the ’90s that feels lovingly crafted and genuinely heartfelt, this one is easy to root for—though viewers who prefer faster, more modern animation style might find it pleasantly old-school.
