Speechless (1994)
In the midst of election season in New Mexico, political speechwriters Julia Mann and Kevin Vallick begin a romance, unaware they are working for candidates on opposite sides.
What people think about Speechless
Speechless is one of those romantic comedies that sneaks up on you with brains as well as charm, using the circus of campaign season as a surprisingly cozy backdrop for two people who can’t help falling for each other. Michael Keaton and Geena Davis spark with that rare mix of physical comedy and quick, intelligent rhythm, making even the talkiest scenes feel like flirtation with stakes. The movie’s best pleasure is its tone: light on its feet, gently satirical about politics, and warm-hearted about how messy grown-up feelings can be when careers and convictions get involved. It’s not a laugh-every-minute farce, but when the humor lands and the chemistry kicks in, it’s the kind of mid-’90s studio rom-com that feels easy to like and hard to resist.
Speechless is clearly aiming for a breezy, opposites-attract rom-com set against the fun backdrop of campaign-season chaos, and on paper Geena Davis and Michael Keaton should make that sing. The problem is the script feels oddly mechanical, with jokes that land late (or not at all) and a pace that drifts when it should be snapping with screwball energy. Even the central “rival speechwriters” hook doesn’t generate much real tension, so the romance can come off more forced than sparkling. If you’re here for sharp political satire or Tracy-and-Hepburn-level banter, this will likely disappoint, but if you just want an easy, low-stakes ’90s date movie with likable stars and a few cute moments, it’s serviceable.
