Serial Mom (1994)

Serial Mom is a wickedly bright suburban satire that takes the prim-and-proper American dream, polishes it to a shine, and then gleefully smashes it with a smile. John Waters keeps the pace snappy and the tone deliciously trashy-but-smart, turning true-crime obsession and neighborhood etiquette into a comedy of manners with a body count. Kathleen Turner is the secret weapon: she plays Beverly with such poised, PTA-ready conviction that every line lands like a compliment that might also be a threat, and the movie gets funnier the more sincerely she commits. It’s not for the squeamish or the easily offended—this is R-rated, gleefully vulgar, and proudly tasteless—but if you like your laughs pitch-black and your satire sharp, it’s a blast.

Serial Mom is John Waters trying to skewer suburban “perfect family” culture by turning petty etiquette crimes into gleefully extreme, tabloid-ready murder comedy. When it lands, Kathleen Turner commits hard and sells the joke with a dead-serious performance, and the movie’s best moments are its shamelessly tasteless one-liners and courtroom/media circus energy. But the satire can feel oddly mild and scattershot for such a wicked premise, with episodes that play more like disconnected sketches than a steadily escalating story. If you want sharp, tightly written dark comedy or genuinely biting social commentary, you may find it thin; if you’re up for campy, mean-spirited-in-a-cartoon-way violence and vulgarity played for laughs, it’s a decent time capsule of ’90s Waters.
