The Scout (1994)

Albert Brooks is in peak form as a man whose career depends on selling the impossible, and Brendan Fraser plays the phenom with a charismatic unpredictability that turns every scene into a high-wire act; Dianne Wiest adds a smart, human counterweight that keeps the movie from floating away. It’s not for those who want strict realism or nonstop jokes, but if you’re on the fence and like sports movies that are more about obsession, hope, and performance than box scores, this one’s an under-sung crowd-pleaser.

The Scout wants to be a quirky baseball fairy tale with a sharp Albert Brooks character at the center, while also dabbling in a “is this kid okay?” psychological hook.
