Penny Marshall keeps the tone breezy and humane, letting the laughs come from culture clash and stubborn personalities while gradually revealing a surprisingly tender respect for the recruits, who are played by an ensemble that feels like real people rather than inspirational props. Watching Shakespeare get smuggled into basic training as a tool for confidence and self-respect is both funny and genuinely moving, without turning syrupy. It is predictably structured and unapologetically earnest, so if you’re allergic to feel-good uplift you may roll your eyes—but if you want a smart, comforting comedy-drama with a big heart, it more than earns its salute.
