Priest (1995)

Antonia Bird’s Priest is special because it refuses easy answers, turning a story about doctrine into a bruisingly human portrait of conscience under pressure. Linus Roache gives a fearless, quietly incandescent performance as a young cleric whose compassion and desire pull him in opposite directions, while Tom Wilkinson and Robert Carlyle add grit and warmth to a world that feels lived-in rather than sermonized. The film’s tone is raw, urgent, and deeply empathetic—more kitchen-sink realism than pious melodrama—and it builds to a finale that lands with a hard-won, emotionally cleansing power. It’s not for everyone, given its frank sexuality and harrowing subject matter, but if you want a drama that treats faith and morality as something people bleed for, it’s essential viewing.

Priest is clearly trying to take a hard, compassionate look at faith under pressure, using a young priest’s moral crisis to confront hypocrisy, sexuality, and institutional silence. The problem is it often plays less like lived-in drama and more like a pointed argument, with big “issue” scenes that can feel engineered to shock or provoke rather than earn their emotional weight. It’s also heavy going: the subject matter includes child sexual abuse, homophobic abuse, and explicit sexual content, and the film doesn’t soften the blows. If you want a subtle, character-first exploration of religion, this may feel preachy and melodramatic—but if you can handle bleak material and want a blunt, angry 90s provocation anchored by committed performances (especially Linus Roache and Tom Wilkinson), it may still land for you.
