Jodie Foster gives a fearless, astonishingly specific performance—funny, wary, radiant, and heartbreaking in the same breath—while Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson bring steadiness and compassion that keep the film grounded rather than preachy. It’s not a twisty thriller so much as an emotional slow-burn about language, dignity, and the right to be seen on one’s own terms, and if you’re open to that kind of thoughtful drama (with brief PG-13 nudity), it’s quietly unforgettable.

Nell is clearly aiming for a humane, heartfelt look at an isolated woman being pulled into society, and Michael Apted frames it like a gentle morality tale about compassion versus curiosity. The problem is the screenplay often takes the safest, most predictable route, leaning into tidy melodrama instead of really wrestling with the thorny ethical questions it sets up. If you’re expecting a tense thriller or a nuanced debate about consent, exploitation, and “help,” you may find it frustratingly surface-level.
