Léon: The Professional (1994)

Léon: The Professional is the rare crime thriller that’s as tender as it is lethal—a slick, neon-lit New York fable where bursts of action give way to surprising quiet humanity. Luc Besson directs with a cool, stylish confidence, turning every hallway, shadow, and sudden eruption of violence into something sharply composed and irresistibly watchable. Jean Reno makes Léon more than a “cleaner,” Natalie Portman arrives with a startling, star-making intensity, and Gary Oldman chews through the frame with operatic menace. It’s not for everyone—the subject matter can feel uncomfortable at times—but if you can sit with its edge, you’ll find a genre classic that’s thrilling, emotionally engaging, and hard to shake.

Luc Besson is clearly aiming for a stylish, operatic crime fable—a lonely professional killer finding a sliver of humanity while a traumatized kid fixates on revenge. The problem is that the film repeatedly flirts with a dynamic between Léon and 12-year-old Mathilda that many viewers will find creepy, sexualized, and hard to shrug off, even when it’s not explicitly acted on. If you’re sensitive to “problematic” older films where the camera and tone feel uncomfortably complicit, this can come off more disturbing and dated than edgy. That said, Jean Reno is quietly compelling, Natalie Portman is startlingly good for her age, and Gary Oldman’s chaos is electric—just know the craftsmanship doesn’t erase the discomfort for everyone.
