Love Affair (1994)
Ex-football star Mike Gambril meets Terry McKay on a flight to Sydney, which is forced to land on a small atoll. They become romantic on board a ship sent to take them to a larger island. They agree to meet in New York three months later to see if the attraction is real. One shows up but the other doesn't. However, a chance meeting brings them together again.
What people think about Love Affair
Love Affair (1994) is the kind of grown-up romance that doesn’t hustle for your attention—it earns it with grace, wit, and that old-fashioned belief that chemistry can feel like destiny. Warren Beatty and Annette Bening bring a lived-in warmth to the flirtation and longing, while Glenn Gordon Caron keeps the tone airy and elegant even when the emotions turn serious. And then there’s Katharine Hepburn, arriving like a bolt of charisma and wisdom, reminding you what movie stardom used to mean. If you want a modern, fast-cut rom-com, this may feel deliberately unhurried, but if you’re in the mood for style, sincerity, and a love story that trusts atmosphere as much as dialogue, it’s a lovely bet.
Love Affair (1994) is clearly trying to serve up an old-school, swoony romance about two people daring to choose each other, and it’s at its best when it leans into the star power and the sunny, escapist travel fantasy. The problem is it often feels like a respectful museum remake: glossy, a bit kitschy, and oddly low on real emotional punch, with plot turns that ask you to swallow a lot without questioning it. Warren Beatty and Annette Bening have charm, and Katharine Hepburn adds a welcome jolt of personality, but the movie can slide into maudlin territory instead of earning its tears. If you love classic, fate-driven melodrama and don’t mind contrivances, you’ll be fine; if you need sharp writing, believable behavior, or modern romantic realism, this one may test your patience.
