It Could Happen to You (1994)
Charlie Lang is a simple, kindhearted New York City cop. When he realizes he has no money to tip waitress Yvonne Biasi, Lang offers her half the winnings of his lottery ticket. Amazingly, the ticket happens to be a winner, in the sum of $4 million. True to his word, Lang proceeds to share the prize money with Biasi, which infuriates his greedy wife, Muriel. Not content with the arrangement, Muriel begins scheming to take all the money.
What people think about It Could Happen to You
It Could Happen to You is the kind of romantic comedy-drama that feels almost radical in its belief that decency matters—and that one small, generous choice can ripple through an entire city. Andrew Bergman wraps a modern, Capra-like fairy tale in New York bustle, letting Nicolas Cage’s soft-spoken sincerity and Bridget Fonda’s grounded warmth create chemistry that sneaks up on you and then simply holds. The movie’s pleasures aren’t in surprise twists, but in its steady, feel-good conviction that kindness can be contagious, even when greed and cynicism start circling. If you prefer sharper, more ironic rom-coms it may seem old-fashioned, but if you’re in the mood for something sweet, humane, and genuinely uplifting, this one earns its smile.
It Could Happen to You is aiming for an old-fashioned, feel-good fairy tale about decency being rewarded, with a simple premise and a big heart. The problem is it leans so hard into sweetness and moral lessons that the story can feel more like a comforting fable than something remotely believable, and the plot moves exactly where you expect with little emotional bite. Some supporting characters are drawn in broad strokes, which can make the conflict feel more like a cartoon obstacle than real tension, and the ending may strike you as conveniently arranged. If you like gentle 90s rom-com warmth, low-stakes drama, and a wholesome vibe, it’s an easy watch—but if you need sharper writing, realism, or surprises, this will probably test your patience.
