Highlander III: The Sorcerer (1994)

Highlander III: The Sorcerer feels like the series remembering what made it sing in the first place: mythic romance, clean-limbed swordplay, and that heady sense of centuries colliding in a single heartbeat. It opens with a sweep of 15th-century legend and carries that energy into neon-modern New York, where Christopher Lambert’s Connor MacLeod moves like a weary hero who’s still game for one more duel, and Mario Van Peebles’ Kane brings a gleefully theatrical menace that keeps the movie crackling. Director Andrew Morahan leans into a pulpy, comic-book fantasy vibe—less tangled than the second film, more in tune with the franchise’s simple pleasures—so even when it’s silly, it’s the fun kind of silly. If you want grounded realism, this isn’t your match, but if you’re on the fence and craving a nostalgic, sword-and-sorcery jolt with a clearer, more satisfying groove than Highlander II, this one earns a watch.

Highlander III: The Sorcerer is clearly trying to course-correct the series by steering back toward the first film’s mythology: Connor, swords, immortals, and a new villain with big “Prize” ambitions. The problem is it plays like a remix you didn’t ask for—familiar beats, murky logic, and a story that lurches from set piece to set piece without much momentum or emotional weight. Mario Van Peebles brings energetic swagger as Kane and there are a few enjoyably pulpy moments, but the character work is thin and the plotting can feel downright sloppy if you’re expecting coherent fantasy world-building.
