Hercules in the Underworld (1994)

Hercules in the Underworld is peak ’90s mythic adventure: a brisk, pulpy descent into fire-and-brimstone spectacle that lets Kevin Sorbo’s Hercules feel larger than life while still wrestling with very human doubts and loyalties. Director Bill L. Norton keeps the pace moving from brawny set-piece action to eerie, supernatural dread, with the Underworld itself delivering a satisfyingly spooky TV-movie grandeur—complete with gods, curses, and the kind of monster trouble that makes legends feel earned. Anthony Quinn brings a weathered gravitas as Zeus, and the story gives Hercules more than punches to throw, asking him to prove his character when temptation and betrayal circle close. It’s not for viewers looking for subtle drama or modern effects, and it does include some sexual content and harsh moments, but if you want a fun, dark-tinged fantasy quest with classic myth vibes and a hero you can root for, it’s an easy ticket.

Hercules in the Underworld is clearly aiming for pulpy myth-adventure with higher stakes, a trip to Hades, and a “Hercules as husband and man” angle layered on top of the monster-of-the-week formula. The problem is it’s still very much a 90s TV movie: the pacing lurches from brawls to melodrama, the effects and Underworld spectacle are more bargain-bin than epic, and the sexual jealousy/seduction subplot (including nudity and an attempted assault) can feel grimly handled rather than dramatically earned. Kevin Sorbo has the sturdy charisma to keep it watchable and Anthony Quinn adds some gravitas, but if you’re expecting a grand mythic descent or family-friendly fantasy, this one will likely irritate more than it thrills. It’s best for fans already invested in the series who can forgive rough edges in exchange for familiar action and soap-operatic stakes.
