Felidae (1994)

Felidae is the rare animated film that refuses to be “cute,” using its hand-drawn beauty to lure you into a shadowy, rain-slick mystery that plays like a hardboiled detective story—only the detectives and victims have whiskers. Michael Schaack builds a world that feels both grimy and oddly lyrical, where every alleyway and rooftop chase hums with dread, and the film’s ambition shows in how it braids suspense with satire and unsettling moral questions about cruelty, power, and belief. Francis, voiced with dry intelligence, makes for a wonderfully cynical guide through the carnage, and the movie’s slightly surreal vibe keeps you leaning forward even when you think you’ve got your bearings. Fair warning: it’s very much an adults-only experience with graphic violence and sexual content, but if you can handle the intensity, it’s a gorgeous, gruesome cult oddity that proves animation can stare straight into the dark and not blink.

Felidae is clearly aiming for a grown-up animated noir: a cynical cat detective story drenched in horror, conspiracy, and grimy urban atmosphere. The problem is it often feels like it’s sprinting through its own mythology, so the mystery can come off confusing and under-explained unless you’re willing to just ride the vibes and fill in gaps yourself. It’s also not “dark for kids” dark—it’s TV-MA for a reason, with violence, gore, and sexual content that can feel extra jarring in animation. If you want a clean, tightly plotted whodunit, this may frustrate you, but if you’re curious about a rare, unapologetically adult animated horror with memorable mood and a nasty edge, it has its own cult appeal.
