Torment (1994)

It’s a psychological thriller that doesn’t chase cheap shocks; it seduces you with ambiguity, letting you feel the dread of suspicion spreading through ordinary rooms and polite conversations until nothing seems trustworthy. François Cluzet charts a frighteningly believable collapse, while Emmanuelle Béart remains the film’s haunting center—present, elusive, and impossible to forget once the credits roll. If you prefer clear answers and tidy catharsis, this may feel intentionally unsettling, but if you like dramas that linger like a bad thought you can’t shake, it’s a mesmerizing descent.

Torment is clearly aiming for a classy, slow-burn descent into marital paranoia, with Chabrol trying to turn jealousy into a kind of psychological prison rather than a simple thriller hook. The problem is that the film can feel like it’s circling its own idea—more simmer than surge—so if you want escalating tension and a clean, gripping build to the payoff, you may find the pacing frustratingly idle. It also doesn’t always give Nelly the depth the story needs, which can make the central obsession feel lopsided instead of devastating. Still, if you’re drawn to bleak, character-driven studies of obsession and can tolerate a deliberately cold, suffocating mood, there’s a grim pull to watching it tighten the screws.
