Death Machine (1995)

Death Machine is the kind of scrappy, high-voltage sci-fi horror that feels like it was built in a workshop full of smoke, sparks, and bad corporate decisions—and that’s exactly its charm. Stephen Norrington traps you in a sleek, grimy near-future skyscraper where the suspense doesn’t come from grand philosophy so much as the exhilarating, blood-slick certainty that something metallic and furious is hunting in the vents. The practical creature work gives the Warbeast real weight and personality, and Brad Dourif’s gleefully unhinged performance turns the film into a midnight-movie banquet of menace and dark humor. It’s not for viewers who want restrained violence or subtlety, but if you’re on the fence and you miss the era when genre movies swung big with bold ideas and tangible effects, this one earns your time.

Death Machine is trying to mash up corporate cyberpunk satire with a claustrophobic “monster loose in the building” slasher, and on paper that’s a pretty tasty B-movie cocktail. The problem is the hyperactive editing and constant angle-switching can make the action hard to track, so instead of tension you may feel like you’re watching chaos through a strobe light. The plot lurches from idea to idea and some performances are more comic-book than convincing, which you’ll either embrace as camp or find unbearable. Still, Brad Dourif brings enjoyably unhinged energy and the creature/techno-nightmare vibe has a scrappy charm—just don’t come expecting clean storytelling or sleek sci-fi polish.
