The Client (1994)

The Client is the kind of smart, propulsive thriller that hooks you early and then keeps tightening the screws, not with flashy twists but with the terrifying idea that a kid can become the most valuable—and vulnerable—piece on the board. Joel Schumacher keeps the pace brisk and the tension human-sized, letting the danger feel immediate while Susan Sarandon brings a bruised, fiercely compassionate warmth that turns the story into more than a legal chess match. Brad Renfro is remarkable as Mark Sway—street-wise, scared, and stubbornly brave—and Tommy Lee Jones adds crackling energy as the prosecutor whose ambition fills every room he enters. It’s intense and often dark, especially with threats aimed at a child, but if you like crime dramas where character and suspense work hand in hand, this one earns your nerves.

The Client wants to be a tense, crowd-pleasing legal thriller where an ordinary kid gets crushed between the FBI and the mob, and on that basic level it does the job. The problem is it often plays like a well-oiled formula: you can see the story beats coming, and Joel Schumacher’s direction leans more “slick 90s thriller” than genuinely surprising. It’s also a rough watch at times, with sustained threats aimed at a child and suicide-related material that isn’t just background texture, so if you’re sensitive to that, steer clear. Still, Susan Sarandon brings real heart and grit, young Brad Renfro is impressively believable, and Tommy Lee Jones is reliably entertaining even when the script feels like it’s on autopilot.
