China Moon (1994)

China Moon is the kind of classy, sweat-slick noir thriller they don’t make much anymore: moody, morally tangled, and shot with a visual elegance that makes every shadow feel like a clue. Ed Harris anchors it with a bruised, deeply human performance as a detective whose good intentions curdle into desperation, while Madeleine Stowe brings a dangerous, wounded magnetism that keeps you leaning forward even when you’re not sure who to trust. Director John Bailey builds tension not through cheap jolts but through atmosphere—humid nights, quiet conversations that sting, and the creeping dread of a case closing in from the inside. It does deal frankly with domestic violence and its fallout, so it’s not a cozy watch, but if you want a smart, adult thriller that feels like a lost 90s gem, this one rewards your attention.

China Moon is aiming for a sultry, old-school noir where lust, guilt, and bad decisions spiral into a tight little tragedy, and it does have the right cast and atmosphere to sell that intention. The problem is the screenplay: it leans hard on coincidences, clunky dialogue, and a first act that can feel oddly flat before the thriller mechanics finally kick in. If you need airtight plotting and believable character choices, you’ll likely spend a lot of time rolling your eyes at the contrivances instead of enjoying the tension.
