Bad Girls (1994)
Four former harlots try to leave the wild west (Colorado, to be exact) and head north to make a better life for themselves. Unfortunately someone from Cody's past won't let it happen that easily.
What people think about Bad Girls
Bad Girls is a scrappy, crowd-pleasing Western with a hook you don’t see often: four women who’ve been written off by the frontier deciding they’re done being collateral damage and riding toward a life they get to choose. Jonathan Kaplan gives the genre a fresh jolt by centering camaraderie and grit, and the film’s real engine is its cast—Madeleine Stowe brings a wounded steeliness that makes Cody feel lived-in, while Mary Stuart Masterson and Andie MacDowell add warmth and bite that keep the group dynamic moving. The vibe is dusty, romantic in a rough-edged way, and unapologetically pulpy, with chases, standoffs, and a steady undercurrent of defiance rather than nostalgia. It’s not for everyone—there’s harsh R-rated violence and sexual threat—but if you want a Western that lets its women take up space, make noise, and earn their hard-won forward motion, this one delivers.
Bad Girls wants to be a female-led Western about escape, solidarity, and payback, and on paper that’s a great pitch with a strong cast. The problem is the movie often plays like a checklist of Western clichés—pursuit, betrayal, jailbreak, showdown—staged with stiff direction and a surprisingly flat sense of place, so the empowerment angle doesn’t land as hard as it should. It also leans into R-rated exploitation beats (including sexual violence and forced nudity) that can feel more like cheap heat than meaningful storytelling, which may be a dealbreaker regardless of your tolerance for the genre. If you’re craving a gritty, authentic Western or a sharp feminist revision, this likely isn’t it; if you just want a glossy, star-driven revenge ride with a few satisfying moments, you might get enough out of it.
