Angels in the Outfield (1994)
Roger is a foster child whose irresponsible father promises to get his act together when Roger's favourite baseball team, the California Angels, wins the pennant. The problem is that the Angels are in last place, so Roger prays for help to turn the team around. Sure enough, his prayers are answered in the form of angel Al.
What people think about Angels in the Outfield
Angels in the Outfield is the kind of family movie that wears its heart on its sleeve and somehow earns the right to do it, blending baseball-movie rhythms with a gentle, fairy-tale sense of wonder. It’s funny in an easy, crowd-pleasing way, but what really sneaks up on you is how sincerely it treats a kid’s hope—Danny Glover brings grounded warmth, Tony Danza adds scrappy charm, and the whole thing plays like a sunny afternoon game where you actually care who makes it home. The tone is unabashedly feel-good and sentimental, with just enough real-life sting around foster care and growing up to give the wish-fulfillment some weight. If you’re allergic to wholesome ‘90s uplift, it may be too earnest, but if you’re even slightly open to believing in second chances, it’s a crowd-pleaser that leaves you lighter than it found you.
Angels in the Outfield is trying to be a big-hearted, kid-friendly sports fairy tale about hope, second chances, and finding a family, with baseball as the cozy backdrop. The catch is that it leans hard into syrupy sentiment and broad slapstick, and the story moves in a pretty predictable, plodding way that can feel more like a lecture in “believe!” than a satisfying underdog sports movie. If you want real baseball tension, sharper comedy, or anything remotely subtle, this will likely test your patience. Still, it’s clean, earnest, and occasionally charming, with Danny Glover adding some grounded warmth that helps the movie land when it stops trying so hard.
