Last Hero in China is the rare martial-arts comedy that doesn’t ask you to choose between laughing and being genuinely impressed—Jet Li delivers both, pairing razor-clean kung fu with a playful, self-aware swagger that lovingly pokes at the very legends it’s built on. The problem is the tone swings wildly: it wants slapstick one minute and grim kidnapping-and-corruption stakes the next, so if you’re sensitive to darker subject matter being played for laughs, this will feel off.
