The Three Musketeers (1993)
D'Artagnan travels to Paris hoping to become a musketeer, one of the French king's elite bodyguards, only to discover that the corps has been disbanded by conniving Cardinal Richelieu, who secretly hopes to usurp the throne. Fortunately, Athos, Porthos and Aramis have refused to lay down their weapons and continue to protect their king. D'Artagnan joins with the rogues to expose Richelieu's plot against the crown.
What people think about The Three Musketeers
The Three Musketeers (1993) is the kind of old-fashioned, crowd-pleasing swashbuckler that remembers movies can be pure, glossy fun—cloaks snapping, swords flashing, and a jaunty sense of adventure carrying you from palace intrigue to daring escapes. Stephen Herek keeps the pace lively, bathing the story in handsome costumes and storybook scenery, while the cast leans into the camaraderie: Chris O’Donnell gives d’Artagnan an eager, romantic spark, and Oliver Platt practically steals scenes with comic swagger. It’s not a definitive, faithful-literary adaptation so much as a 1990s theme-park ride through Dumas, complete with flirtation, melodrama, and rousing action. If you’re in the mood for wit, romance, and heroic bravado over historical grit, this one earns its “all for one” spirit.
This 1993 take on The Three Musketeers is clearly aiming for a breezy, crowd-pleasing swashbuckler with romance, jokes, and a glossy Disney-style sense of adventure. The problem is it often feels more like a costume-and-quips package than a story with real momentum, with characterization that can come off blunt and action scenes that don’t always have the snap or elegance you want from swordplay. If you’re hoping for a sharp, literary adaptation or a gritty, emotionally weighty version, this will likely feel lightweight and a bit synthetic. Still, Oliver Platt brings welcome comic energy, the leads have a likable camaraderie, and if you just want a harmless, nostalgic romp that doesn’t ask much of you, it can do the job.
